MAHSOPA: Five Decades of Fellowship and Lifelong Connections
Initiated by former Malacca High School (MHS) teacher, T. Rajendran, MAHSOPA started as an informal monthly gathering at the Majestic Hotel along Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin, Kuala Lumpur connecting the many MHS Alumni living in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The Association was officially registered as Persatuan Murid-Murid Tua Sekolah Tinggi Melaka, Wilayah Persekutuan dan Selangor (Registration No. 1907 Selangor) on October 29, 1976. Its inaugural leadership team consisted of President Haji Mokhtar bin Daud, Secretary Lee Kim Seng, and Treasurer Lee Kwok Tong.
Successive leadership changes in the Association saw several notable presidents. Tun Abdullah Mohd Salleh was elected as the second President in 1977, followed by Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Arshad in 2007. Long serving Deputy President, Dr Leo Ann Mean succeeded as President in 2022 upon the passing of Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Arshad.
Primary Objectives of the Association
Promote closer ties with the alma mater
Create spirit of friendship among old pupils
Promote educational, cultural, sports and social activities
Endeavour together with other organisations having the same objectives
Contribute towards the promotion of
community services and goodwill
In alignment with these core objectives, MAHSOPA established a scholarship and a welfare fund to support educational and charitable endeavours:
The Tan Sri Abdullah Salleh Scholarship Fund (inaugurated in 1979, named in honour of the Association’s 2nd President). The Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Arshad Welfare Fund (established in 2021, named in honour of the 3rd President).
On 21 January 2013, the Registry of Societies (ROS) officially approved changing the Association’s name to the Melaka High School Old Pupils Association. By dropping “Wilayah Persekutuan dan Selangor” from its title, the Association expanded its scope to welcome all alumni throughout Malaysia. Demonstrating its growing global reach, the Association has since established international chapters in both Singapore and Hong Kong.
